J. Frank Dobie, in "The Longhorns," stated, "The Longhorns were more than a breed - they were a race. Gaunt, wiry, intractable, they were themselves pioneers in a hard stange land."

Texas Highways magazine in July, 2005, stated. "As an authentic Texas icon, the Longhorn stands proudly with the Alamo and the Long Star flag. No other creature personifies perseverance, survival, and the indomitable Texas spirit quite like it."

The Texas Longhorn, in addtitionto their sheer beauty and majesty, are, by nature, gentle and intelligent. The Longhorns at Sunset Inn can trace their ancestry back tothe Texas Longhorn herd at the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge (WMWR). The initial WMWR herd was established in August, 1927, by the Federal government to save the longhorn from extinction. The initial herd had twenty cows, three bulls, three steers, and four calves. Additionally, Rusty and Rosie have ancestry back to the YO Ranch in Mountain Home, Texas.R

At Sunset Inn we maintain a "traditional Texas Longhorn herd." We raise four calves each year. These calves are sold when they are approximately ten months old. All have been vaccinated (1), wormed, branded and trained to be hand fed.

The Longhorns at Sunset Inn are registered with the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America. When a Longhorn is sold the registration is tranferred to the new owner at no charge.
